What is a domain name?
In the process of planning your first website, you have probably been told that you need a “Domain Name”. This is true. A domain name is what people use to find your website. Without it, your website will never come to life. Here is a no-nonsense explanation of what a domain name is, why you need one and how to get one.
The internet runs on something called “IP Addresses.” The term “IP” is short for “TCP/IP.” We are already getting into an area that is boring and nerdy. Don’t worry, it stops here. But what you should understand is that computers cannot communicate with words. The terms “Yahoo” or “Google” or “Facebook” mean absolutely nothing to a computer. But what a computer does understand is a number such as this:
69.147.76.15
That number is the actual “IP Addresses.” address for Yahoo.com. Go ahead, copy and paste it into your browser; you will see yahoo.com. Fortunately, there is a mechanism behind the scenes that translates a name to an IP address. So, when you type yahoo.com into your browser, this behind the scenes mechanism translates that request from yahoo.com to “69.147.76.15″
So, what does this all mean?
That was just an explanation to underscore why domain names are important. You need a domain name. Sure, you could just reference your website using an IP address such as 123.456.789.321, but how many people do you think would remember that? The fact is, the internet is nothing new. Everyone knows that to get to any website, you need to type “www.some-kind-of-name-.com” into your browser. that “some-kind-of-name-.com” is a domain name. You’ll need one for your website.
