How To Organize Your First Website – Part I
So, you’ve decided to build a website. Maybe your small business needs an online presence. Maybe you are just an individual, looking for a personal we page. Either way, here is what you know to get started.
Part I – Register Your Domain Name
In order to have a website, you need a domain name. You cannot have a website without one. A domain name is the “.com” address you see in your browser’s address bar. For example, google.com is a domain name. Another example is yahoo.com. You will need to select a domain name that has not already been taken.
Once you have selected a domain name, you will need to register that domain name. Think of this as having picked a phone number that you want, but now you have to actually tell a phone company that you want to use that number. In the case of a domain name, the company that handles the registration for you is called a Registrar. There are many of these companies. Each one can handle the domain name registration for you. Once you have registered your domain name with a registrar, you own it. No one can take it from you. If you let your registration expire and you do not renew it, then someone can take it from you. Most registrars offer something called “Auto Renewal.” This means that when your registration expires, it is automatically renewed in your name for you. You’ll need to have a credit card on file with this registrar so that payment for this automatic renewal can be automatic.
Once your domain name is registered, you will need to associate it with a hosting account. This would be like telling a cellular phone company that you want your new phone number, (212) 555-1212 to be associated with one of their plans. In the case of a website, the company that will help you in this case is a web hosting company. In most cases, the company that registered your domain name probably offers web hosting as well. In a perfect world, having your registrar host your website as well will make life much easier.
